THE MARKET: WHAT IS THE VALUE OF ART

VENICE AGENDAS 2019 -THE MARKET: WHAT IS THE VALUE OF ART? aims to examine the financial mechanism that powers the art world. How does the system of the art market work? Who are the beneficiaries and who are the losers? Through research, round table discussions and commissions of new work, Venice Agendas explores the impact of the art market on the territory and environment that artists, institutions, curators and writers have to navigate to create, present and discuss original contemporary artwork.

The project began in May during the press days of the Venice Biennale with recorded round table discussions at the Metropole Hotel and with our roving reporters Sacha Craddock, Fari Bradley and Jean Wainwright conducting interviews with artists, writers, curators and international art world professionals. The interviews will be broadcast online through our website and social media.

Our first artist commission was an an Instagram project in Venice by the artist Nicky Hirst. Her work can be seen on the VA website and on instagram @veniceagendasartists #VANickyHirst

VA19 THE MARKET PROJECT SUMMARY

VENICE AGENDAS 2019 THE MARKET: What is the Value of Art? examines the financial mechanism that powers the art world. How do people in the arts make a living? How does the art market impact on the territory and environment that artists, institutions, curators and writers have to navigate to create, present and discuss original contemporary artwork? VENICE ARTIST COMMISSION - NICKY HIRST

The artist Nicky Hirst has been commissioned to create a new project on the market theme. You can follow her project on Instagram @veniceagendasartists #VAnickyhirst

‘I am looking for connections and contradictions in the images, making visible the diverse ways in which we all try to make sense of the world. I will observe Venice with curiosity and by using a dual format for my Instagram site we can compare and contrast. Perhaps by looking at familiar sights from unfamiliar vantage points or pairing seemingly incompatible structures, critical thinking can be creatively revealed.’

ISLINGTON MILL ART ACADEMY

Saturday, October 26, 2019 11:00 17:00 Manchester City Art Gallery (map)

Islington Mill Art Academy (IMAA) is our free peer-led art school. It is open to anyone who wants to be an artist. Learning activity (workshops, crits, coaching, group residencies and projects) is shared and led by the energy and ideas of current student-members. The Academy is not formally accredited; students choose to graduate when they feel ready to work more independently as artists.

IMAA positions itself within the wider ethos of trust and an openness to try new things embedded at the Mill. It is a place to experiment and enquire; to translate arts education into something viable and meaningful in the real world. The Academy gives artists an opportunity to take control of their own learning through facilitation, practice and experimentation.

Islington Mill Arts Academy will be running a series of workshops at the Manchester City Art Gallery

LUVA is an artist run gallery, experiment, and social hub. Open for just one day a month and situated in a lock up garage on the Approach council estate in East London, LUVA is dedicated to exhibiting diverse contemporary UK artists.

Founded and co-run by Jordan McKenzie and students from Central Saint Martin’s College of Art, LUVA asks critical questions about the contexts contemporary art sits within, its relationship to the geographical/ economic/social and cultural space (the estate) that it occupies and how cultural institutions can have meaningful dialogues with both local and non-local audiences.

LUVA is committed to providing material support to the community it is based within. We’re teaming up with the First Love Foundation who give food, support and advice to local people in crisis.

HOP PROJECTS: CONTRA-CULTURE

Fri, Dec 20, 201911:30 Sun, Dec 22, 201917:00

HOP Projects CT20 (C.I.C) is an independent, cross-disciplinary and experimental platform for the production, exchange and distribution of the visual arts, installation art, architecture, design and performance.

Established in September 2017, it is a non-profit organisation based in the heart of the Creative Quarter in Folkestone, UK.

It is committed to a unified vision of bringing together the visual arts with theatre, performance, spatial installations, sound and technology that prioritises the development of ideas above pre-defined genres or disciplines. It believes in the urgency in new modes of expressions and pioneering practices that can tear down the barriers between the audience and the ‘white walls’, making contemporary art relevant and far-reaching to a wider audience.
